Becoming a Referee

We assume you are familiar with the game, including the basic rules.

The next step is to complete the Referee Rules Test. Before you take that test, it would be helpful to spend time to understand the rules of this league and the changes to those rules. Also study the mechanics and guidelines for officials. You will need to complete the Referee Test (online at this link) before the clinic.

The next step is the 3-hour Referees' Clinic on Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving (Nov 27). We will teach you what you need to know about refereeing (assuming you have a good understanding of basketball). Recognize that most players have a deficient knowledge of the rules. You need to learn the rules of the game as an official. The Simplified and Ilustrated Rule book is a good choice, as the rules pages on this web site.

The league provides referee shirts to wear over your own shirt. These are available in the gym on game day. They are shared shirts meaning that someone else may have worn that same shirt earlier in the day. You must provide your own Fox-40 series whistle - other types of whistles are not acceptable. (We intend to bulk-order and make those available for purchase at our cost while supplies last. The cost is $5.87 by check only (no cash or gold bullion), payable to SRBC. You do not need to purchase your whistle from SRBC but we are attempting to aid you in finding a whistle at a good price.) You need to have your own lanyard (the cord to hold your whistle). You need to have dark and perferably black pants, and tennis shoes (also preferably black).

You will receive "on-the-job-training" in the form of "coaching" during timeouts, intermissions, between games, etc. Please expect this, and don't be defensive. We all need constructive feedback; better performers listen and incorporate that feedback into their game.
