Come game day, you should be at the gym at least 10 minutes before your scheduled start time. During that time you can:
- Get your personal belongings stashed on the bleachers (but do not leave wallets or other valuables).
- Slip on a referee shirt.
- Get your whistle ready to go.
- Talk to your partner about how you will work together (your "pregame").
- Review rule differences for your next game compared to others.
- Communicate what one thing you are trying to improve on.
- Review any odd situations you recently experienced and how they
should have been handled.
- Agree together about how you will handle rotation "bumps" and in bound plays.
- Decide who will be the Referee (toss the ball) and who is the Umpire (chop time).
- Review rules for funny things that happen on the toss.
- Make sure you have signed the referee log for the game.
- Make sure you have the correct size game ball.
- Make sure the teams are warming up away from their bench.
- Make sure the coach of both teams have a volunteer at the scorer's
table (just remind the coaches).
- Make sure the clock operator knows how to run the clock. (If they do
not, you or the Gym Supervisor need time to teach them.)
- Make sure the score keeper knows how to keep score, including tracking
points, personal fouls, and team fouls. Player stats are not required. (If
the volunteer has any questions about this, you or the Gym Supervisor need
time to help them.)
- Make sure both teams have their roster in the book. (If they do not,
get the coach to take care of it.)
- Get the teams ready to start on time by bringing them to the center by
game time for prayer.
You are responsible for ensuring that each of the above items are done. If you need this list as a reminder, then print it out and have it with you.
