Each year we hold a referee clinic, and all officials are expected to attend.
We attempt to vary the format a little each year to keep it interesting.
Even those official who managed very well last year will need an opportunity
to talk about rule changes, get question clarified, and attack one or two of
those remaining bad habits. Every high school varsity offical works a few
unpaid scrimages each year to get some critique and otherwise "get the
rust out" before the games begin.
To encourage all officials to attend, we use the clinic attendance to help
set the pay rate for each person individually. If the
Referee Test is
completed in advance, the official attends the whole clinic,
and the official brings a Fox-40 whistle (it must be a Fox-40 series), then their
pay rate is increased up to 25% for the season. Those who are late, leave early,
or in other ways are under-prepared receive a prorated adjustment.
(Note: We plan to offer Fox-40 whistles at the clinic at our cost.
We will update this page with that cost. Payment must be a check made out to SRBC.)
This year the clinic is on Sunday afternoon
Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 27) from 1:30 to 4:30.
All first and second year officals should arrive before 1:30.
Officials with two or more years experience may arrive at 2:30.
The purpose of that date is to get as close to the beginning of the season as possible.
This puts us only 6 days before we are on the court for real games.
Be sure to bring a whistle. (Never use a metal whistle, as it is too easy
to break a tooth!) The proper whistle is a Fox-40, but they can be
difficult to locate. Also be sure to complete the
Referee Test, which
will be ready before then (we promise!).
