If you have never refereed before, that is OK - we will teach you and you will be able to learn in an environment with minimal confrontation from coaches and fans.
Generally you will referee 3-4 games each week. (Depending on the number of referees we have, you may not work each week.) This seems to work best in terms of one's ability to continue to hustle, make good call, etc. (Officials do get tired. It is work, and will tire you out if you are doing a good job at it.) There are always exceptions, and sometimes a couple of people will have 5 games in a given week, and sometimes a couple of people only get 2 games to make the schedule work.
We are moving to a web-based assigning process.
After registering to officiate in our league and confirmation from Richard Ogg,
you will be able to access screens to stipulate your availability, accept game
assignments, etc.
You will be notified automatically via email when games are being offered to you.
Come game day, you should be at the gym at least 10 minutes before your scheduled start time.
You cannot do your job properly if you're not there at least 10 minutes early. Late arrivals will, at a minimum, reduce the number of games you're asked to work.
After the last game of the evening, the referees are expected to stay and help clean up the gym. This normally takes about 15 minutes. All we do is pick up the chairs (and the parents will do this for you if asked before the game is over), put away the clock controls, push back the curtain, pick up large trash items (e.g., bottles), and sweep the floor. It sounds like a lot, but with 4 referees, 4 coaches, a gym supervisor, and usually a few others, it really goes fast. We do expect to pay you for your work. The gym supervisor will identify those referees who stay and help clean the gym, and those referees will receive an extra $2 for their effort (estimated $8+/hour).
